Je suis directrice de casting depuis une décennie et après avoir terminé le film hollywoodien DEATH RACE, ainsi que le film très controversé MARTYRS de Pascal Laugier, j’ai complété la distribution du film de Gaspar Noé, ENTER THE VOID. Nous nous occupons aussi de doublage de films et d’animation dans toutes les langues : casting et enregistrement
Comment êtes-vous venue à collaborer avec Gaspar Noé et quel a été votre travail sur Enter the Void ?
Ma collaboration avec Gaspar Noé est arrivée par l’entremise de la productrice Suzanne Girard, qui produit les plus grands films au Québec. Elle m’a appelé pour me convoquer à un entretien mystère lors duquel elle me dévoila son projet de co-production avec la France et le Japon. Comme la distribution de rôles, incluant la recherche de stars et de talents inconnus, est ma spécialité, elle m’engagea en mentionnant que Gaspar Noé ne voulait pas de vrais comédiens. Elle m’a donné aussi un aperçu des besoins de figurants : 50 figurants japonais pour une scène d’avion. « Pas de problèmes, Suzanne, je vais regarder IRRÉVERSIBLE et je te prépare la première ébauche de casting ».
Paz de la Huerta, qui joue Linda, est connue, mais que pouvez-vous nous dire de Nathaniel Brown, qui joue Oscar, le personnage principal du film ? Par ailleurs, IMDB évoque la présence dans la distribution de deux jeunes acteurs jouant le rôle d'Oscar et Linda enfants... Que pouvez-vous nous en dire ?
ENTER THE VOID s’avérait être un défi comme je les aime.
Je me suis mise à la recherche des différents rôles à remplir : dès le départ, Paz de la Huerta était déjà sélectionnée pour jouer Linda et nous devions trouver une petite fille pour jouer le même personnage, enfant. Pour ce qui est de Nathaniel Brown, qui joue Oscar, le personnage principal du film, Gaspar l’avait rencontré dans un bar au Japon. Il fallait donc trouver de jeunes acteurs qui ressemblaient à Oscar à différents âges pour les scènes de son enfance: Oscar bébé, à 4 ans, 8 ans et jusqu’à son âge actuel. Nous avons auditionné des enfants de Montréal, Toronto et New York. Le gamin sélectionné m’avait envoyé sa photo et son curriculum par courriel, à l’aide de sa mère bien sûr. La ressemblance était tellement frappante que la production décida de le faire venir à Montréal pour rencontrer Gaspar. Un autre descendit de Toronto.
La sélection finale s’arrêta sur Jesse Kuhn de New York. La jeune comédienne, Emily Alyn Lind, est venue de Caroline du Nord pour tourner le film à Montréal.
Une autre talentueuse comédienne se greffa à la distribution : Janice Béliveau, qui joua la mère de Paz et Nathaniel. Il fallait trouver une belle fille, qui jouait naturellement (puisque Gaspar préfère les non-comédiens), et qui accepterait de jouer une scène nue.
Nous avons encore auditionné plusieurs candidates et le choix de Gaspar s’est arrêté sur Janice, deux jours seulement avant le début du tournage.
L’équipe de production était très nerveuse et la costumière s’arrachait les cheveux. Elle était pourtant heureuse d’apprendre que son fils, Simon Chamberland, allait jouer le père. Il n’avait jamais joué non plus, mais il se débrouilla très bien, surtout qu’il avait une scène d’amour avec une fille qu’il ne connaissait pas encore.
Ce n’est d'ailleurs qu’au « wrap party », qui a clôturé le tournage, que Simon a confié à Janice que la scène, plutôt explicite, avait été très particulière à jouer… puisqu’il est en fait homosexuel ! C’est par professionnalisme, pour que sa partenaire et toute l’équipe croient pleinement à son personnage, qu’il a choisi de ne rien divulguer pendant le tournage. Plusieurs ont été très étonnés par cette anecdote !
Avez-vous pu voir ce que donne le film et travaillez-vous toujours avec Gaspar à l'heure actuelle?
J’ai bien hâte de voir le film avec tous les effets spéciaux qui y seront inclus et je souhaite avoir l’occasion de travailler à nouveau avec Gaspar et son super producteur Olivier Théry-Lapiney.

It was therefore necessary to find young actors who looked like Oscar at different ages for the scenes of his childhood: Oscar baby, at 4 years old, 8 years old and until his current age. We auditioned children from Montreal, Toronto and New York. The selected kid had emailed me his photo and curriculum, using his mother of course. The resemblance was so striking that the production decided to bring him to Montreal to meet Gaspar. Another came down from Toronto.

It was not until the “wrap party”, which ended the shooting, that Simon confided to Janice that the scene, rather explicit, had been very particular to play… since he is in fact homosexual! It is out of professionalism, so that his partner and the whole team fully believe in his character, that he chose not to disclose anything during the filming. Many were very surprised by this anecdote!

I can't wait to see the film with all the special effects that will be included in it and I wish to have the opportunity to work again with Gaspar and his super producer Olivier Théry-Lapiney.
