Jan Kounen est né le 2 mai 1964 à Utrecht (Pays-Bas).
— Études aux Arts Décoratifs à Nice (E.P.I.A.R.), particulièrement dans les domaines cinéma/animation/pixillation. Diplôme National Supérieur d'Expression Plastique en 1988. Il tourne dans cette école ses premiers courts-métrages en super 8mm (soft) et 16mm (LA MORT JAUNE - THE BROADWORD) et réalise également des films d'animation pour la TV hollandaise.
— Assistant opérateur et réalisateur pour des clips vidéo et des documentaires et caméraman reporter pour une agence d'images.
— En 1989, il réalise GISÈLE KÉROSÈNE qui obtient le Grand Prix du court-métrage au Festival d'Avoriaz et, l'année suivante, L'ÂGE DE PLASTIC avec le groupe Elmer Food Beat.
— Tout en poursuivant des projets d'écriture (adaptation d'un roman de Serge Brussolo, série TV Gisèle Kérozène), il signe en 1990 ses premiers clips vidéo pour Pauline Ester ("Le monde est fou"), Elmer Food Beat ("Daniela"), Chihuahuas et Erasure ("Voulez-vous", "Lay All Your Love On Me").
— Il filme également de nombreux spots publicitaires en France, Allemagne et Grande-Bretagne (pour Nuts, Peugeot, Tang, Gordon's Gin, Miko, Adidas...).
— Jan KOUNEN écrit le projet de VIBROBOY en 1991 avec Carlo de BOUTINY qu'il tourne en 1993 (Prix de la Recherche au Festival de Clermont-Ferrand).
— En 1997, il réalise DOBERMANN.
— En 2003, il réalise BLUEBERRY, L’EXPÉRIENCE SECRÈTE (sortie : 11 Février 2004)

Comment avez-vous connu Gaspar Noé ?
Il avait fait Carne, moi Vibroboy, très vite nous nous sommes retrouvés dans les festivals. Notamment le festival Love et Anarchie en Finlande, avec les deux films pour faire un programme. De projos en projos, l'amitié et le plaisir de voir les visages hagards, crispés ou hilares à la sortie des salles qui diffusaient Vibro versus Carne, nous ont unis.
Quel est votre regard sur son cinéma, très différent du vôtre ?
Très différent ?... Mais nous avons plein de points commun :
-aimer provoquer.
-être peu productif.
-faire de chaque film un challenge perso et une exploration originale.
-avoir voyagé ensemble vers les mystères de la jungle amazonienne.
-aimer Alain Cavalier.
Gaspar apparaît dans une scène hilarante de Dobermann sous les traits d'un vendeur de kebab. Pouvez-vous nous parler du tournage de cette scène ?
Rien de bien spécial à raconter, du plaisir. Mais un jour en province un cinéphile m'avait agressé me disant que je n’avais pas le droit de faire un chose pareille à monsieur Gaspar Noé, que c'était une honte qu'un grand cinéaste comme lui soit dans ce mauvais film. Déjà un fan Gasparien survolté!
Si je vous donne cinq mots pour définir Gaspar Noé dans le paysage cinématographique actuel ?
Espiègle - Vif - Experie-mental - Inclassable -Définitivement inclassable
L’historien disposera bientôt d'un lexique élargit : "C'est du pur Noé" ou "d'inspiration très gasparienne".
Pour conclure : un petit mot (juste un p'tit !) sur le prochain film de Gaspar ?
Je ne veux rien savoir, et m'asseoir dans une salle obscure pour le découvrir.

How did you know Gaspar Noé?
He had done Carne, me Vibroboy, very quickly we found ourselves in festivals. In particular the Love and Anarchy festival in Finland, with the two films to make a program. From projos to projos, the friendship and the pleasure of seeing the haggard, tense or hilarious faces at the exit of the rooms which broadcast Vibro versus Carne, united us.
What is your view of his cinema, which is very different from yours?
Very different? ... But we have a lot in common:
-love to provoke.
-be not very productive.
-make each film a personal challenge and an original exploration.
-to have traveled together to the mysteries of the Amazon jungle.
-love Alain Cavalier.
Gaspar appears in a hilarious scene from Dobermann as a kebab vendor. Can you tell us about the shooting of this scene?
Nothing special to tell, fun. But one day in the provinces a cinephile attacked me telling me that I had no right to do such a thing to Mr. Gaspar Noé, that it was a shame that a great filmmaker like him was in this bad film. Already a supercharged Gaspar fan!
If I give you five words to define Gaspar Noé in the current cinematographic landscape?
Mischievous - Lively - Experie-mental - Unclassifiable - Definitely unclassifiable
The historian will soon have an expanded lexicon: "It's pure Noah" or "very Gasparian inspiration".
To conclude: a little word (just a little!) On Gaspar's next film?
I don't want to know anything, and sit in a dark room to find out.
